UFC Fight Night 96 bonuses: Brandon Moreno earns $50K for upset win over Louis Smolka

Jaime Valdez-USA TODAY Sports

Despite having several wars at Saturday's UFC Fight Night 96, there was no Fight of the Night. Instead, the UFC handed out four $50,000 Performance of the Night bonuses to Nate Marquardt, Brandon Moreno, Henrique da Silva and Curtis Blaydes.

The news was announced by the promotion following the event. The main event between John Lineker and John Dodson likely would have won Fight of the Night, but Lineker was disqualified from bonuses due to missing weight.

In the biggest upset of the card, Moreno submitted top UFC flyweight Louis Smolka in his promotional debut. The Mexican fighter took on the fight with Smolka on short notice, and was able to sink in a guillotine choke early in the first round to get the victory. Moreno was just coming off losing in the first round of The Ultimate Fighter 24.

Marquardt returned to the winning column in impressive fashion, knocking out Tamdan McCrory in the featured UFC Fight Pass prelims. The 37-year-old fighter faced some adversity early on in the first round, as he seemed to be threatened by some submission attempts. But that didn't stop Marquardt from coming out in the second and connecting on a right hand and then a kick to McCrory's face, knocking him out and finishing the fight. The former Strikeforce welterweight champion is now 3-3 in his past six trips to the octagon.

Meanwhile, da Silva earned $50,000 for an incredible comeback victory. The UFC light heavyweight was getting mauled in the second round of his fight with Joachim Christensen, but was able to comeback by taking Christensen's back and transitioning to an armbar. The Brazilian remains undefeated with a professional record of 12-0.

Lastly, Blaydes defeated Cody East via technical knockout in a dominant performance. Blaydes utilized his wrestling and ground and pound to wear on East and eventually get the referee to stop the fight.
