The UFC's return to Sacramento now has a main event, and she's a local fighter.
Popular strawweight contender Paige VanZant will headline UFC on FOX 22 against Michelle Waterson in Sacramento, according to UFC president Dana White. White broke the news during the broadcast of Wednesday night's edition of UFC Tonight.
The 30-year-old Waterson (13-4) hasn't fought since July 2015 at the TUF 21 Finale, which was also her UFC debut. She scored a third-round submission (rear-naked choke) over Angela Magana. The "Karate Hottie" was supposed to face Tecia Torres at UFC 194, yet had to pull out of the fight with an injury.
Waterson was most recently recovering from a broken hand.
VanZant (7-2) is coming off of a resounding victory over Bec Rawlings at UFC on FOX 21 in Vancouver on Aug. 27. That fight — which she won via a second-round switch kick to the head — was a rebound from her lone loss in the UFC, a loss to Rose Namajunas back in Dec. 2015.
