Holly Holm signs new UFC contract, says fight announcement coming 'soon'

Esther Lin, MMA Fighting

Holly Holm doesn't want to wait until the summer or later to fight. She wants to fight as soon as she can. And we could find out shortly if she'll get her wish.

Holm told Ariel Helwani on Monday's edition of The MMA Hour that she has signed a new contract with the UFC and an announcement about her next fight could be coming "soon."

"If I fight sooner rather than later, it won't be a rematch," Holm said. "But there's still a possibility for a rematch. ...We'll wait and see how it unfolds."

The UFC has maintained that Holm will not fight again until Ronda Rousey is ready for an immediate rematch. Holm knocked Rousey out in the second round of their UFC 193 main event in November. UFC president Dana White has said publicly that he had UFC 200 on July 9 circled for Holm vs. Rousey 2.

However, Holm and her agent Lenny Fresquez have said all along that it was Holm's preference not to wait that long. Holm likes to fight three or four times a year and didn't want eight months off before stepping in the Octagon again.

On Monday, Holm added that it would be tough for her to wait for July when no one knows for sure that Rousey will be 100-percent ready by then. The former champ reportedly has two movies to film in the first part of 2016.

"I just don't want to wait around for things if they're not set in stone," Holm said. "A lot of people have been talking about the rematch, but nobody really knows for sure. I haven't really heard if she really wants it yet or not or if she's occupied with some other things right now. I think that's the hardest part for me. ... I don't want to wait around for something that may not happen. I want to be able to fight soon. I like being active, because I love the sport."

If Rousey is not next for Holm, then who is? Miesha Tate would be the most logical chose for No. 1 contender. Tate has won four in a row and is coming off what was called a title eliminator against Jessica Eye at UFC on FOX 16 in July.

"That's a fair guess," Holm said of Tate. "I think that fight makes a lot of sense to people. She was kind of the one that was in line for the title before they gave the fight to me. I think people are curious to see how it will go because this is a whole new title fight now."

Rousey has beaten Tate twice before and the UFC chose to go with Holm at UFC 193 rather than a third fight between the two women.

If Holm fights Tate next, then the winner would likely face Rousey later in 2016. It would either be Rousey trying to avenge her loss to Holm or trying to win back the title against her biggest rival -- a good story, either way.

But, Holm said, the immediate rematch with Rousey is still in play. We should all find out before too long what the decision is, though.

"I'll let them announce it," Holm said. "I'm pretty sure it will be soon."
