Dana White on welterweight champion Robbie Lawler: 'He's our Evander Holyfield'

In the aftermath of Carlos Condit and Robbie Lawler's thrilling main event at UFC 195 on Saturday night, UFC president Dana White said his welterweight champion reminded himself of one of boxing's great heavyweights.

"[Lawler]'s our Evander Holyfield man, right?" White said during the post-fight press conference. "It's just like he's never in a boring fight. He's always, when he gets hurt he continues to go toe-to-toe. Robbie reminds me...he's our Evander Holyfield. He really is.

"And I respect so much when, you're in a fight like this and you have to come out, you have to come out in that fifth round and do what Robbie did. And he did it. Great fight."

Lawler (27-10-1) turned it on in the fifth round at the MGM Grand against Condit (30-9), who was tied with Lawler on two scorecards heading in. At one point he had Condit against the fence and hurt as the fight drew near its conclusion, but the challenger persevered to hear the scorecards. Lawler won via a split decision, 48-47, 47-48, 48-47, with the very close third round acting as the pivot.

With the victory Lawler successfully defended his title for the second time, the first coming against Rory MacDonald at UFC 189 in what was considered by many to be the fight of the year.

White tweeted later that Saturday night's main event featured the "best fifth round" in UFC history.

With the hoopla surrounding the bout as a "fighter's fight," given the aggressive styles of both Condit and Lawler, White was asked if the bout exceeded his own expectations.

"Yeah, it was what I thought it was," he said. "Carlos fought a great fight. Carlos stayed on the outside. He used his range very, very well, and then even when he got in close he was great in the clinch. You know, he came real, real close to some of those spinning elbows, to hitting Robbie with that stuff. But it was a great fight fought by both guys. It was awesome man."
