Morning Report: Mike Winkeljohn believes Miesha Tate is more dangerous to Holly Holm than Ronda Rousey 'in many ways'

Esther Lin, MMA Fighting

With UFC president Dana White confirming that women's bantamweight champion Holly Holm will indeed be fighting before a rematch with Ronda Rousey, all signs point to a title defense against top contender Miesha Tate at UFC 197 in March.

Holm and her team had lobbied to face Tate and with news that the champ has signed a new contract it looks like she got her wish.

Speaking with Submission Radio, Holm's coach Mike Winkeljohn says the bout isn't all about keeping busy, it's about doing what's right.

"We, as a camp, always figured, 'Give it to the No. 1 contender,'" Winkeljohn said. "Miesha Tate is No. 1. That makes sense. I think Tate did the best of everyone against Ronda Rousey. I think she deserves it. That makes sense to us and Holly would love to have that fight."

Holm conquered the mystique of Rousey back at UFC 193 with a headkick KO, but that doesn't mean Winkeljohn is counting on an easier matchup with Tate.

"It was the hardest in that [Holm] was up against this legendary status and the pressure was incredible," Winkeljohn said of Holm bout with Rousey. "Although, being the underdog takes a lot of pressure off you. There's different styles out there. Miesha Tate is going to scramble all day long while Ronda was trying to get quick submissions. There's a difference in how that plays out. In many ways, Miesha is more dangerous than Ronda Rousey."

"Not overall, but for different parts of the fight, there are women out there that can be tougher than Ronda Rousey. In the scramble? I think Miesha Tate is better than Ronda Rousey."

Cat Zingano might disagree.

Holm is expected to face Tate in the co-main event March 5 at UFC 197.
