UFC 189: Mendes vs. McGregor took place July 11, 2015 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. Robbie Lawler (26-10, 1 no-contest) defended his UFC welterweight title against Rory MacDonald (18-3), which aired live on pay-per-view. Catch the video highlights above.

Round 1: They took a little extra time between fights to change the canvas in the cage after Jeremy Stephens bled all over it. Actually, they did a presentation on the new canvas, like they do at hockey arenas on the ice. They showed a little presentation of what's to come between Rory and Robbie, and Conor and Mendes. Pretty cool.
MacDonald came out to Tool's "Forty Six and Two," which was fitting. And Lawler came out to Motown. John McCarthy gives them instructions. They touch gloves. And here we go. Lawler quickly to center, and MacDonald slams home a long right hand. Lawler, the southpaw, sizes up and lands a good left hand. MacDonald trying to use the left hand to jab. The opposite stances make for plenty of patty-cake as they look for openings. Right hand from MacDonald errant. Right hand again from MacDonald, who is throwing cautiously, trying to keep away from Lawler's power. High kick from MacDonald misses, and Lawler clubs him with a counter. A chant of R-O-B-B-I-E breaks out. One-two from MacDonald, and he got the right home. Using the jab, is MacDonald, and it's keeping Lawler off. Both preserving energy it ooks like. Both very cautious, but they come together briefly for a skirmish in the middle. Hip movement from Rory, who looks like he wants to land big. He sneaks in a body kick after threatening to come up top. MacDonald shoots in, and is thwarted, and Lawler lands a knee on parting. More measuring. Mostly Irish crowd let's out an air of impatience. Jabs from MacDonald. Lawler lands a right hand as MacDonald simultaneously threw. Lawler picking up his offense in counters. Round coming to an end. Very close round. If we're keeping it real, it could have been a 10-10. But, forced to choose... MMA Fighting scores R1 for MacDonald, 10-9.
Round 2: A little swelling on MacDonald's face, above the eye. Also a red mark on Lawler's stomach. Nice right jab from Lawler, and again. Both hit MacDonald flush. It's a tango right now of footwork and dekes, with jabs. Nice big left from MacDonald. They continue to offset each other, but MacDonald beginning to up the pace. He lands a body kick. He wheels now, and starts back with the jab. Body punch from MacDonald, who is changing levels and using his length. Right now Lawler circling, and as he does MacDonald catches him up on the cheek with a kick! Very loud, but Lawler takes it and continues on as if nothing happened. Jabs from MacDonald. Masterful jab-work from MacDonald, and right as I say that Lawler lands a one-two, with the left hand crashing biggest. And again! Now Lawler coming to life, as he begins to bounce and come to life. As he gets in again, it's MacDonald who slams home a right. Now we're firing. Both guys throwing down. Blood is pouring from MacDonald's nose. Lawler with another one-two, and they both land. The scene on MacDonald's face is gruesome. They exchange again, and Lawler lands a big counter left hand which puts MacGregor off balance. Bobbing and movement. Round ends. Round 3: MacDonald out quickly, and Firas Zahabi -- his coach -- warned him not to get overzealous. They both land stiff jabs, each that halts forward momentum. MacDonald threatening to change levels and shoot in, but it's he doesn't do it. Lawler with a left hand that gave MacDonald pause. Head kick from Lawler, and a straight jab follow-up. Lawler slowly making this his fight. There's the single leg, and Lawler, on one leg and bouncing, sprawls out of it. Nice work there. Ax kick attempt from MacDonald, and it comes nowhere near Lawler. MacDonald's face just a pulpy bloody mess, as he stays on the outside. There's a nice left hand, and then a head kick from MacDonald. The kick wasn't flush -- he does it again, and it glances off of Lawler's forearms. MacDonald gulping for breath, but that's because his nose is busted to hell. Jab by Lawler, and now Lawler opens up and fires from range. He didn't land well there, and MacDonald slams home a counter. Head kick lands from MacDonald! And that staggered him. Now MacDonald pressing, landing shots! Knee, another knee in the clinch, the elbows! MacDonald is taking him apart. The round is going to end though! MacDonald really hurt Lawler in the last 30 seconds, and MacDonald came to life. Headkick was the beginning. MMA Fighting scores R3 for MacDonald, 10-9 (29-28 for MacDonald overall).
Round 4: Zahabi told MacDonald that he had Lawler figured out. They come out, and the headkick from MacDonald again! It lands the same, adn right where we left off. It's all MacDonald, landing front kick, elbows, knees, punches. Lawler says he's alright, and MacDonald lands a two more head kicks, and on the fence more elbows. It's all MacDonald. What a showing from both guys here, but it's MacDonald who has figured out that Lawler has now answer from the head kick. MacDonald might be taking a moment to catch his breath. Lawler still at center, and looking to land something. But MacDonald strikes him again, and now a superman punch. Right hook for Lawler, though, just to remind everyone that he's still around. Lawler now with a combo, and those punches counted. They clinch, and an uppercut from Lawler, who is now making his move again. Jab from Lawler, and a shot to the body. MacDonald ow cocks and throws and eats a counter left. MacDonald shoots in and Lawler instinctively sprawls and thwarts it. Body kick from MacDonald, as Lawler lands a couple of straight lefts. Right jab snapping off with a little sting still from Lawler. Still, MacDonald's face looks like mush. MMA Fighting scores R4 for Lawler, 10-9 (38-38 overall)
Round 5: Big staredown after the bell. Now they come right back out, and MacDonald's features are rearranged. Superman punch and a jab from Lawler. Now they stand and trade, and they stay at it. Wow. Both guys going out on their shields, and there's a punch from Lawler that hurts MacDonald! That drops MacDonald! His nose might be shattered. He turtles up as Lawler comes in, and McCarthy steps in and calls Lawler off. Unbelievable.
