UFC 188: Velasquez vs. Werdum took place June 13, 2015 at the Arena Ciudad de México in Mexico City, Mexico. UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez (13-2) returned from a 602-day injury layoff to unify his title against interim beltholder Fabricio Werdum (20-5-1) in the night's main event, which aired live on pay-per-view. Round 1: They open trading in the pocket and both land rights, but Werdum slips and falls to his back. Velasquez doesn't follow. Werdum stands and they clinch. Velasquez lands an overhand right, but they tie back up. Velasquez kneeing the legs of Werdum and Velasquez scores a takedown. Werdum rolls to his base and they separate. As they stand, Velasquez's striking begins to take over. Werdum catches a kick and takes Velasquez down! Velasquez stands, but they clinch again. They separate and Werdum scores a good inside leg kick and Velasquez returns the favor. Now a nice jab from the Brazilian. Two right hands land for the Brazilian now. A right scores for Werdum, but Velasquez returns to the favor.

Round 2: Left hook scores for Werdum now as Velasquez drives forward. Now Velasquez is scoring with a series of leg kicks, both inside and outside. Left hook by Werdum, but Velasquez fires a right. Werdum is starting to tag Velasquez and doing it hard. Werdum is unloading on him now and Velasquez is getting bombed on. Velasquez is firing back, but Werdum is landing knees, right hands and more. Velasque is on his feet, but he's easily on the defensive. Werdum is essentially scoring at will except for Velasquez's leg kicks. Velasquez eats a MONSTER knee and drops. He gets back to his feet, but the champion is in trouble.

Round 3: Werdum jabbing and circling early as Velasquez pressures. Velasquez takes him down and nearly gets reversed, but stands back out. Werdum stand and fires a head-snapping jab. Velasquez drops for a takedown and nearly gets guillotined, but a he pulls back out eats a knee from the Brazilian. Velasquez chases down a takedown, but falls into a guillotine and taps! Werdum has done it!
