UFC 187: Johnson vs. Cormier took place May 23, 2015 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. Light heavyweight contenders Anthony Johnson (19-5) and Daniel Cormier (16-1) collided to determine who would supplant Jon Jones as UFC champion in the night's main event, which aired live on pay-per-view. Round 1: John McCarthy is the referee. Both fighters open orthodox. Johnson with an outside leg kick. Rumble scores with a heavy right hand that drops Cormier, but got too aggressive and Cormier has his back standing. Cormier switches to a single leg lift and trips him forward, eventually grabbing a craddle. Johnson stands, but he's still in the front head lock position. Johnson separates and whiffs on a takedown. Cormier is on a takedown, but can't finish. Johnson is switching stances. Cormier drives Johnson into the cage with an underhook. They break just before the bell and Cormier gets a few punches off.

Round 2: Johnson with a check hook scores. Cormier catches a kick, picks up Johnson and plants him on the mat. He's in half guard on top. Hard elbow on top now from Cormier. Cormier briefly locks up a kimura, but can't get it. He's still hunting it. Cormier lets go of the grip, but secures the crossface. Johnson tries to sit up, but he's pushed back down and he's eating hard elbows from Cormier.

Round 3: Outside leg kick for Cormier while Johnson lands a hook. Johnson tries to take DC down and briefly does before DC pops back up again. Now DC turns him into the cage, gets behind him and drags him to the mat. Both fighters are exhausted. But Cormier landed enough shots while he sneaks through an arm under the chin. He has to adjust to twice to get it, but it works. Rumble taps.
