UFC 187 results: Joseph Benavidez outlasts John Moraga for third straight win

Esther Lin

LAS VEGAS -- In a flyweight division in which no one has a clear case for a shot at dominant flyweight champion Demetrious Johnson, Joseph Benavidez is doing his best to make his case.

Benavidez, who has lost twice to Johnson, continued his winning ways against the rest of the pack at 125 pounds. He took a unanimous decision on Saturday night at the MGM Grand Garden Arena, winning on across-the-board 30-27 scores.

That gives Benavidez (22-4) three straight wins and puts him at 10-0 in his past 10 fights against opponents other than Johnson.

Benavidez took control early in the first, when he caught a Moraga head kick and then began winging punches. Moraga got back to his feet, only to be taken right back down. The scenario repeated itself as Moraga got up only to be taken down again.

Moraga scored with a couple of low kicks early in the second round, but Benavidez kept his composure and opened a deep cut on Moraga's scalp. Benavidez worked from top position over the round's final minute, but Moraga was able to hang on.

Moraga came out swinging at the start of the third round, but Benavidez refused to be goaded into a brawl, as he eventually scored a takedown and then kept it on the ground to seal the deal.

"That's why we were put in the opening spot on the pay-per-view," Benavidez said. "We're two guys who bring the action for 15 minutes. Moraga was tough out there tonight."

Moraga has dropped two of his past four fights.
