UFC 187 live blog: Joseph Benavidez vs. John Moraga

Round 1: Both fighters open orthodox. John McCarthy is the referee. Benavidez switches stances and attempts a head kick, but eats a right for his efforts. Moraga collapses, but locks up a knee shield, but Benavidez as the underhook, pressuring Moraga over. Benavidez passes and tries to sit for the guillotine, but loses it in the scramble. Moraga tries to return the favor, but ends up back in knee shield. Moraga is able to stand after getting double underhooks from full butterfly guard. Moraga locks up double underhooks and hits a lateral drop. Benavidez scrambles to his feet and scores a double against the fence. Moraga locks up full guard before the end of the round.

Round 2: The two trade inside leg kicks with Moraga briefly taking Benavidez off of his feet. Benavidez scores a right outside leg kick after a hand combo, but Moraga returns the favor. Crushing body kick and another scores for Moraga. Benavidez presses Moraga into the fence, drops levels and takes him down. Benavidez moves into side control as Moraga moves his legs to kick. Benvidez essentially holds position from there.

Round 3: The two trade a series of punches, Moraga landing the better of them with his right hand. Benavidez drives forward on a knee tape and lands in side control. Moraga recaptures full guard. Moraga's trying to control posture while Benavidez rains down elbows from the top. Moraga briefly frames for a submission, but never gets even remotely close to anything. Moraga continues to try to control posture while Benavidez bangs him out on top.
