Dana White: Luke Rockhold ‘probably’ next for UFC middleweight title

Joe Camporeale-USA TODAY Sports

Luke Rockhold and Ronaldo Souza impressed at UFC on FOX 15, but it looks like Rockhold might be the next in line for a shot at the UFC middleweight title.

"Jacare" made quick work of Chris Camozzi on April 18, but Rockhold dominated and tapped former light heavyweight champion Lyoto Machida minutes later in the main event. UFC president Dana White won’t set in stone right now who will earn the next shot at the gold, but is leaning towards Rockhold.

"Probably. It makes sense that he would be next, yes, that he would be next," White said of Rockhold during a scrum with the Latin America media. "Who knows how all this stuff is gonna play out."

Rockhold finished all of his four fights in the UFC after losing to Vitor Belfort in his promotional debut, while "Jacare" is unbeaten in the Octagon with five wins, including four stoppages.

Middleweight champion Chris Weidman is set to defend the title against Belfort in the co-main event of UFC 187 in Las Vegas on May 23, and White doesn’t think it "makes sense" to talk about the next contender before the next championship fight.

"Even talking about it doesn’t make sense because, first of all, Chris still has to fight Vitor, and whoever wins has to come out uninjured, which hasn’t been easy to do lately, and then we have to make sure Luke stays healthy," he said. "We’ll see what happens with Weidman and Vitor and we will go from there."
