For the better part of five minutes, Patrick Cummins more or less had his way with Ovince St. Preux, using his dominant wrestling game to take his UFC on FOX 15 opponent down at will.
But St. Preux is one of the light heavyweight division's hardest hitters, and he made Cummins pay for a split-second lapse with a ferocious knockout at Newark's Prudential Center.
"The minute I landed I was like, I knew it landed pretty clean," St. Preux (18-6) said. "But I didn't know he was going backwards. I hit him and finished the job."
Cummins (7-1) scored several takedowns, including a big slam, and appeared well on his way to winning the round.

It was noteworthy, though, the OSP in most cases immediately sprang to his feet after the takedown, and had some success in the standup. He stuck with his game plan, which paid off when Cummins went for one last takedown toward the end of the round.
A backpedaling St. Preux caught the shooting Cummins with a fast and sneaky left uppercut which landed clean on the jaw. Cummins hit the mat, then OSP unleashed a ground-and-pound assault before the fight was waved off at 4:54.
"Number one thing coming in here was stopping the takedowns and landing the uppercut," St. Preux said. "I know I was landing one of them eventually."
St. Preux scored his ninth career KO/TKO victory and his second in a row. Cummins had a three-fight win streak snapped.
