Morning Report: Tito Ortiz questions Anderson Silva's legacy after failed drug tests

New, comments
Esther Lin, MMA Fighting

"It made me scratch my head a couple times."

Former UFC light heavyweight champion Tito Ortiz doesn't have much sympathy for former middleweight champion Anderson Silva.

Silva tested positive for anabolic steroid metabolites in his Jan. 31 fight-night drug test following his decision victory over Nick Diaz at UFC 183.

Silva tested positive for Drostanolone, the same anabolic steroid previously found in a random Jan. 9 pre-fight blood test.

"Anderson, how could you do that?" Ortiz told Fighthub. "I'm a huge fan of Anderson. That was just too bad. I don't know what kind of thoughts he's getting from his training partners or from his trainers, but things like that, you shouldn't do."

Forced to rehabilitate a broken leg suffered in his 2013 rematch with Chris Weidman at UFC 168, some, including SB Nation medical expert Dr. Ali Mohamadi, have suggested that the steroids could possibly have aided Silva both in building muscle mass and for muscle recovery.

Citing his own laundry list of injuries suffered over his now 18-year professional career, Ortiz doesn't believe there should be any cause to use PEDs.

"I've had major surgeries," said Ortiz. "I've had L45S1 [spinal] fused. C6-C7 [vertebrae] fused. C3-4 disk replacement. ACL's on both knees. You've just got to work hard on your mind. How much better would have Diaz did if [Silva] wasn't on it? Diaz got popped for marijuana which is crazy. You expect that from him, which is horrible, but Diaz put on a great fight.

"It made me scratch my head. All those guys in the UFC that are getting popped for their drug tests and it's like what kind of thing are you showing to our youth? So many youth look up to us as role models or inspirations. Can't be doing things like that. It's too bad. Kind of sad for the sport at the same time but hopefully they learned and they pay for what they done."

Ortiz also sides with the contingent calling all of Silva' past performances into question.

"Yea, of course," said Ortiz. "People are going to question all that. It's bad all around. Bad for him, bad for the sport, bad for the UFC. You've got to put reprimands on guys like that. You've got to make them pay for it, I think."

FANPOST OF THE DAY

Today's Fanpost of the Day comes via Graham Douglas.

It's time to talk fence grabbing. Case in point: Matt Brown vs. Johny Hendricks

Do you hear that sound? That noise? Actually you hear nothing. Not a whisper. Not a word was spoken about the blatant fence grab that occurred in the Hendricks vs. Brown fight. Nobody even asked Dana White about it. Imagine that. Not a sound, a whisper, a complaint, a ripple.

I can recall one absolutely incredible fence grab that Brown had in this fight. It was just about the longest fence grab I've ever seen. Johny must have been wondering WTF!? Hendricks wouldn't know at the time what was going on other than he was having to really exert energy to no avail.
