Tony Ferguson has put together a string of victories inside the Octagon. But never did he get an opportunity quite like the one he got on Saturday night.
The TUF 13 champion took on one of the most durable veterans in the lightweight division in Gleison Tibau at UFC 184 and took full advantage. The native of nearby Oxnard put on his best career performance at Los Angeles' Staples Center, scoring a victory via rear-naked choke at 2:37 of the opening round of their main-card bout.
Ferguson clipped the American Top Team standout on a couple occasions, first with a straight right and then with a big right hook to the ear. After Tibau hit the mat, Ferguson remained relentless, got Tibau's back, and sunk in the winning choke.
"As soon as I saw him wobbling I thought snapdown city baby," Ferguson said. "I got his neck. I watch a lot of film, there's no real big game to this thing, I go in and give my best."
Ferguson (18-3) was won five in a row and 11 of 12. Tibau, who was fighting just six weeks after his last bout, dropped to 33-11.
