Morning Report: Holly Holm's team pushing for first title defense to be against Miesha Tate, not Ronda Rousey

It doesn't sound like Ronda Rousey could be ready to fight anytime soon.

Rousey told ESPN this week that she could be months away from "eating an apple," so a rematch with women's bantamweight champion Holly Holm at UFC 200 in July may be wishful thinking.

Holm's manager Lenny Fresquez met with UFC officials Monday and has already been given a proposal to book Holm for the July 9 event in the new Las Vegas Arena.

"I'm not sure Ronda will be ready for a July fight," Fresquez told Lance Pugmire of the Los Angeles Times. "She took a severe beating, and I don't think it's in her best interest to take the next fight so fast. They told me she's been ready and cleared, but ... "

Fresquez isn't ruling out the July date with Rousey, but says he'd like Holm to make her first title defense to former No. 1 contender Miesha Tate.

"Holly's used to staying active," Fresquez said. "We're from the old school, and we believe the No. 1 contender is there for a reason. ... [Tate] deserves a shot, but it's not for me to decide."

Fresquez says Holm could be ready to fight as early as February, but that the UFC informed him there weren't any open dates for her return prior to July 9.

"Holly's not so much about the money as [much as thinking] she wants to fight," Fresquez said. "We'd like to fight Miesha. We understand there are risks, but Holly's a dominant champion, and she wants to fight the best. Right now, Miesha is the best."
