Donald Cerrone was the clear-cut crowd favorite in Orlando for his UFC on FOX 17 lightweight title fight against champion Rafael dos Anjos.
But RDA was having none of that.
Making his first lightweight title defense, dos Anjos made short work of Cerrone, needing just 1:06 to retain his title in Saturday night's main event.
Dos Anjos, a Kings MMA fighter by way of Brazil, immediately pushed forward, landing a knee, a body kick, and wicked left hand to the face which altered the outcome of the fight.
Cerrone (28-7, 1 NC), somehow managed to escape a brutal flurry and get back to center Octagon. But it was just a matter of time. Cerrone went for a takedown, dos Anjos landed in top position, and RDA unleashed punches until the bout was waved off.
It was the fastest stoppage in UFC lightweight title history and gave dos Anjos his second win over Cerrone (28-7, 1 NC), who had an eight-fight win streak snapped.
"This guy's a great opponent," said dos Anjos (25-7), the winner of five straight. "Donald won eight fights straight, it's not easy to do this in the lightweight division. I'm so happy, man."
Dos Anjos had an answer for new UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor, who had said he wants to go up to lightweight and challenge for the title.
"Mr McGregor, if you want to come to this division, this is my division," dos Anjos said. "If you want to come to Brazil, I'll go to Ireland, wherever man."
