Things seemed going to be well enough for Floridian Cole Miller in his featherweight battle against hometown boy Jim Alers in their UFC on FOX 17 prelim bout.

Miller controlled the opening round and was doing the same in the second.

Then he took a wicked poke to the left eye. After a long break, Miller's eye wasn't opening, so the bout ended in a disappointing no contest. The time of the stoppage in Orlando was 1:44 of the second round.

While it didn't appear a deliberate foul, Alers fully extended his right hand and caught Miller with as clear an index finger to the eye socket as you'll ever see.

After a consultation period, Miller told referee Herb Dean his eye wasn't opening and probably wasn't going to, so the bout was waved off.

Alers, who took a one-fight losing streak into the bout, goes to 13-2 with a no contest. The American Top Team's Miller, who had won two of his past three, is now 21-9 with 1 NC.
