LAS VEGAS -- It took a little while, but Tecia Torres finally got around to demonstrating how she got her "Tiny Tornado" nickname.
The American Top Team fighter got off to a methodical start in her UFC 194 strawweight bout with Jocelyn Jones-Lybarger. But she heated up late in the second round and then poured it on in the third to earn a unanimous decision victory at the MGM Grand Garden arena.
The judges scores were 30-27 across the board in favor of Torres, who improved to 7-0.
The opening round was the sort of feeling-out performance that have become a bit of a trademark for Torres, who has had all seven of her official career fights go the distance.
In the second, Torres began to connect. Jones-Lybarger (6-2), an MMA Lab fighter who took the bout on short notice after Michelle Waterson had to drop out of the fight due to an injury, attempted a takedown, but Torres ended up on top and rained down a series of punches and elbows to the head before the round ended.
Torres opened up in the final round, landing crisp combos against an opponent who was trying to push the pace. While she didn't get the finish against a tough foe, Torres left no doubt she was the winner.
"Exactly, everyone knows me as a striker, but I want to show I'm a more well-rounded fighter so I can get some of the big fights with the top fighters," Torres said.
