Daniel Straus won Bellator title with badly broken hand

Esther Lin, MMA Fighting

You've really gotta hand it to Daniel Straus.

The American Top Team product beat Patricio Freire to win the Bellator featherweight title Friday night at Bellator 145 with a badly broken left hand, according to an X-ray photo Straus put on Instagram on Monday afternoon. Straus defeated "Pitbull" via unanimous decision to win the belt for the second time.

Straus (24-6) wrote on the post that he broke the hand in the first round. It didn't stop him from dropping Freire with it in the third. The Cincinnati native didn't stop throwing punches with it at all throughout the fight.

"I'm being told this is one of the worst breaks some doctors have ever seen," Straus wrote.

This was the third time the two men have fought. "Pitbull" won the first two, the most recent a fourth-round submission in January. Straus, 31, beat Pat Curran for the featherweight title in November 2013, but then lost the belt to Curran in March 2014.

Straus has only lost to Freire and Curran (both twice) going back to 2009.
