The woman with some of the best hands in MMA is having trouble keeping them healthy.
Joanna Jedrzejczyk's manager Tiago Okamura told MMA Fighting's Ariel Helwani on Sunday that the UFC women's strawweight champion has a broken right hand and will need surgery. The former Muay Thai champion alluded to breaking her hand Saturday night in a unanimous decision win over Valerie Letourneau in the co-main event of UFC 193 in Melbourne, Australia.
Jedrzejczyk broke her same right hand in a third-round TKO win over Jessica Penne in June. Okamura said this break is in a different spot. There is already surgery for the champ scheduled in Los Angeles in a few weeks.
The Poland native wasn't completely dominant early on, but took over late with a barrage of leg kicks and combinations. By the fifth round, Letourneau's right eye was bruised, swollen and bloodied. And her left thigh was purple. This was Jedrzejczyk's second title defense and third fight in eight months.
There is no timetable set for her return, though her next opponent will seemingly be Claudia Gadelha in a rematch of Jedrzejczyk's split decision, title eliminator win last December.
