UFC 193 live blog: Joanna Jedrzejczyk vs. Valerie Letourneau

This is the UFC 193 live blog for Joanna Jedrzejczyk vs. Valerie Letourneau, a strawweight bout at Saturday night's UFC event at the  Etihad Stadium in Melbourne, Australia.

Jedrzejczyk, who is 10-0 in her career, will face Letourneau, who has won all three of her UFC fights, on the main card.

Round 1: Here we go with the co-main. Strawweight title up for grabs. Jedrzejczyk with a huge pop in Melbourne. Steve Perceval is the referee for this one. He instructs the fights. No touching of the gloves. Jedrzejczyk quickly to the center, hands held high. Letourneau staying outside, and she waves a high kick out there just to see. Inside leg kick from Jedrzejczyk. Now Jedrzejczyk comes in with a flurry, and Letourneau takes her down! Wow. It's Letourneau on top, and she's landing a series of right hands — nothing overly big. Jedrzejczyk trying to scramble to her feet. Letourneau with her arm around Jedrzejczyk's neck, but finally the Polish champ stands up to a cheer. Letourneau presses her firmly against the cage, though, and neutralizes her. Knees are coming up inside, the last one landed from Jedrzejczyk. Jedrzejczyk's trying to bust loose enough to get some space to operate, but so far being manhandled. Letourneau with her head presses into Jedrzejczyk's, and they exchange inside knees just before breaking. Jedrzejczyk's eye already starting to puff up. Letourneau with a high kick, and now Jedrzejczyk a front kick from Jedrzejczyk lands to Letourneau's chops! She felt that. They are on the fence. Letourneau this time the one being pressed back, but she's keeping Jedrzejczyk close. They separate, and that kicks off a nice exchange. So far Letourneau unafraid to stand in there and trade. Another front kick to the face from Jedrzejczyk, and again it gets throuh. Letourneau not backing down, though. She's landing. Head kick from Letourneau, and they sling at the horn. Very hard round to score. Could go either way. Big kick from Jedrzejczyk might have made the difference. MMA Fighting scores R1 for Jedrzejczyk, 10-9.

Round 2: Letourneau with a body kick. Jedrzejczyk staying crouched and ready to tear somebody's head off. So far, that violence has been mostly in check. Letourneau leaving her chin out there a little bit open for business. Jabs from Letourneau, and as Jedrzejczyk comes in with a kick, Letourneau catches it and shoves her on one leg to the fence. Now they are busy with knees inside, and there's a sharp elbow from Jedrzejczyk. Letourneau is keeping the pressure on, though. Referee warning one of them to not hold the shorts. They break. Letourneau with some swelling under her eye. Nice combo there from Jedrzejczyk, who is starting to come to life with her punches and kicks. She lands yet another front kick. Letourneau fires a jab right down the boulevard. Joanna is chipping away here, and she's getting nicked up doing it. Body kick from Letourneau, who is making this a damn good fight. They exchange at center, and two right hands from Letourneau. Leg kick from Jedrzejczyk, and she continues to throw the jab. They trade in the middle again, and Jedrzejczyk looked like she got the better of it. Body kicks starting to add up for Letourneau here. She's landing. One thing is for certain, Letourneau doesn't look like a 15-to-1 favorite in this fight. Again, close round. Think the champ did slightly more. Round 3: They trade leg kicks, the mirror each other with face punches. Letourneau pushes Jedrzejczyk up to the fence, and inside they work. The clinch is even. Both are landing. Joanna now turns Letourneau back, and they break. Jedrzejczyk with some jabs. She is trying to find some rhythm, but Letourneau has so far been a complicated puzzle. Front kick from Jedrzejczyk lands to the body, and in return Letourneau lands one. Jedrzejczyk with a leg kick that buckles Letourneau for a split second. Those are starting to hurt. Another high kick that Letourneau catches, and she hammers home a couple of punches as she holds it. Joanna throwing combinations, coming in with jabs to kicks. Letourneau's lead leg is being punished. Jedrzejczyk slowly picking up steam, and the Canadian — though game — is starting to slow down, it seems. Just as I write that, she lands a nice combo. Jedrzejczyk with a body shot, and Letourneau bats her ears. Again Letourneau catches a kick at the end of a combination, but damage getting done. Letourneau with a good body kick. Round 4: Jedrzejczyk quickly to center. Letourneau's corner wants her to go for takedowns. Jedrzejczyk is standing in, and as she kicks Letourneau tries to single leg her. Nothing doing. Solid jab from Jedrzejczyk, had big pop. She's mixing up that lead shot from jabs to leg kicks. It is confounding the challenger. A lot of swelling on Valerie's lead leg. It is bright red. Kick to the body from Letourneau, who remains aggressive. She's tough. But she might need to score something drastic here to get this fight. They are mixing it up at center, and it's Jedrzejczyk that comes in and attacks the lead leg at the end of a combo. Crowd roaring to life. Good exchange, and Letourneau is landing in those spots. Can't say she's not game. There's swelling on the champ's face, but Jedrzejczyk is still bringing it. She's landing on the separations. Body punch from Jedrzejczyk, and again she attacks the lead leg. There's not as much zip on some of these exchanges; fatigue is setting in a bit. Another heavy leg kick from Jedrzejczyk. Still, Letourneau moves right on forward, trying to incite something to her advantage. Body kick from Letourneau lands — as it has all fight. Big trade again, with an audible Jedrzejczyk landing the bigger shots. And she follows that up with a couple of nice right hands. Those hurt. Though the fight is completely competitive, Jedrzejczyk is starting to pull away. MMA Fighting scores R4 for Jedrzejczyk, 10-9 (40-36 overall).

Round 5: Last round. Hell of a fight. They come out swinging. Over 200 strikes thrown by Jedrzejczyk, and she's landed her fair share. Jabs from the champ, who has been landing that regularly. Body kick from Letourneau. She's landing that when she throws it, and Jedrzejczyk is landing the leg kicks and the jabs. The wheelhouse exchanges are 50-50, though Jedrzejczyk is scoring on the breaks. She's a beat faster there. Leg kick again from Jedrzejczyk, and that lead leg is inflamed. Jedrzejczyk's ribs are going to be sore tomorrow, as she absorbs yet another body shot. But for everyone of those, Joanna is landing up top — very busy with jabs and rights. Big high kick lands for Jedrzejczyk, who catches Letourneau coming in. Letourneau needs to finish the champ here. Not sure she has it in her tank to do so. She's still game, though — still standing in there swinging. They exchange again, and Letourneau taking a beating on her face. There's a pretty purple mouse under her eye. More leg kicks. Letourneau will have a hard time walking after this. This one looks like it's going the distance, and it's going to be Joanna Jedrzejczyk retaining her 115-pound belt.
