It wasn't only UFC light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier's first title defense, it was perhaps his most memorable fight to date. Many were even calling Cormier's triumphant victory over Alexander Gustafsson a Fight of the Year candidate.
Cormier (17-1) was able to withstand all that Swedish challenger Gustafsson (16-4) threw at him at UFC 192 on Saturday night in Houston, and he prevailed on the scorecards. The judges gave "D.C" a split decision victory, 47-48, 48-47, 49-46. The fight was a back-and-forth war in which each man had their moments in the clinch, and at range. Gustafsson was even able to take the former collegiate wrestler Cormier down a couple of times.
Saturday's main event was so good, in fact, that both Gustafsson and Cormier received additional $50,000 Fight of the Night bonuses for their efforts. For Gustafsson, who has now lost three out of four fights going back to his classic UFC 165 loss to erstwhile champion Jon Jones, has had silver linings in each of them. He has won FOTN bonuses.
Also receiving bonus money was Albert Tumenov, who scored a resounding first round TKO over Alan Jouban on the prelims (head kick and punches) and the Brazilian fighter Adriano Martins, who knocked out Islam Makhachev (punch) in the first round.
Both Tumenov (16-2) and Martins (28-7) each received $50,000.
