UFC 192 Results: Yair Rodriguez gets past Daniel Hooker despite broken foot

Esther Lin, MMA Fighting

HOUSTON -- Not even a broken right foot could stop Yair Rodriguez on Saturday night.

The breakout star from The Ultimate Fighter: Latin America 1 busted his foot in the first round of his featherweight fight against New Zealand’s Daniel Hooker, but it hardly showed in his performance.

Rodriguez dominated the bout and improved to 6-1, earning a unanimous decision on scores of 30-27, 30-27, and 30-26.

"It affected my ability, but I had to get the job done," Rodriguez said of the injury. "It’s really hurting right now."

Rodriguez, a Chihuahua, Mexico native now based in Chicago, got a star’s reaction from the crowd in Houston. Hooker, for his part, didn’t seem overly eager to engage in the opening round. But Rodriguez still managed to score with a flashy array of spinning strikes and takedowns.

The second round was Rodriguez’s best, as he found his rhythm and dominated Hooker everywhere the fight went.

In the third, Hooker finally seemed to go for broke, perhaps sensing he was down on the card. But even after scoring top position, Rodriguez battered him from the bottom and left him with cuts around both of his eyes.

"I stuck with my game plan," Rodriguez said afterwards. "That guy was very tough and I’m very happy."
