After one round, it appeared Thiago Alves was another case of a respected, veteran fighter who happens to be on his way down.
"The Pit Bull" had been manhandled by Jordan Mein in the first round and seemed to have no real answer for his reach.
But that's why the fights go longer than one round. Alves came out and scored a brutal finish in the second round, using a nasty kick to the body to finish off the upstart Canadian at UFC 183.
The time of the TKO at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas was 0:39 of the second.
"Welterweight division, guess who's back," Alves (21-9) said.

The opening round was a slugfest, but Mein (29-10) got the best of things. Mein used his reach advantage for all it was worth and several times seemed close to finishing Alves. But Alves also tagged Mein a few times, too, a precursor to the next round.
Alves seized an opening and kicked Mein in the ribs with a murderous thud. Mein hit the mat, Alves landed a knee and referee Herb Dean waved off the fight.
The American Top Team fighter, who had missed two years with injuries before winning his return bout last April, has now won three of his past four. It was his first finish since defeating Matt Hughes at UFC 85.
"It's been a long and humbling road, I made a few mistakes along the way, but I learned from them like i always do," Alves said.
