UFC 183 live blog: Tyron Woodley vs. Kelvin Gastelum

This is the UFC 183 live blog for Tyron Woodley vs. Kelvin Gastelum, a catchweight bout at Saturday night's UFC event at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.

Woodley, who has won three of his past five fights, will face Gastelum, who has won three of his past five fights as well, in the main event.

Round 1: Herb Dean is the referee for this co-main event. Gastelum of course was down with flu like symptoms this week, so we'll see how he does. He pursues Woodley early, and right as he leans in he eats a lead right hand. Woodley goes low and throws a punch at Gastelum's belly. The 23-year old Gastelum moves forward, but so far keeping his guns holstered, and the crowd at MGM getting antsy. He waves a jab, and then dekes a leg kick. Woodley lets go of a right hand, but doesn't land flush. Body kick from Gastelum, doesn't get through clean either. They mirror each other's measuring and the crowd again boos. Woodley with a right hand followed by a kic. There's a big exchange, as Gastelum plants in the pocket and trades with the heavy-handed wrestler. Both ate good shots there. Gastelum presses forward and tries to size up a right hand. Simultaneous leg kicks, and those were audible. Big collision. Right hand from Woodley, and now Gastelum is moving a bit more fluidly. Woodley fires a right hand which lands and now another. He's pretty poised in there in the first round. Round ends with a chorus of boos. MMA Fighting scores R1 for Gastelum, 10-9.

Round 2: Gastelum comes forward and tries to put together a volley on the retreating Woodley, but again, nothing big gets through. High kick attempt from Gastelum, misses, and Woodley throws errant counter right. Whiff. Now it looks like Woodley poked Gastelum in the eye. Herb Dean takes a look and stops the action. Gastelum is wincing, but he's okay — we're back at it. Woodley nice kick, and now Gastelum comes in high with a kick of his own. Left hand from Gastelum, and that leads to a solid leg kick. Woodley tries to kick Gastelum's head off with that one, but it was partially blocked. Clean right hand gets through from Woodley, and that hurt Gastelum! He rocked back on his heels. Now Woodley smells blood in the water, and he's trying to put some pressure on. A couple of more right hands and a body kick. Woodley definitely has some rhythm here. Gastelum looks like he's recovering, and he slams home a leg kick on Woodley's lead leg. Big counter right hand from Woodley again, and that caught Gastelum coming in too hot. Another lunging right hand from Woodley, and that slid right off the slippery brow of Gastelum. Body kick from Gastelum lands, but everything is isolated. Gastelum working the right jab, and a front kick. Woodley waits it out then comes forward winging that right again. They both plant in the middle and Woodley snapped Gastelum's head back with a right hand! Still, Gastelum comes forward and ties up Woodley on the fence. They clinch there, and work some inside knees. round ends there. MMA Fighting scores R2 for Woodley, 10-9 (19-19 overall).

Round 3: Final round. Woodley still looks pretty fresh. Gastelum out in the southpaw stance, and they fire from the hips at the center, neither taking anything clean. Gastelum is plodding forward, and the patty-cake of set-ups is followed by a left hand from Gastelum. Now Gastelum is pouring on some pressure, landing some shots on the fence in volume. Woodley was rocked a little bit there, but he wheels around and resets. Gastelum waits fro Woodley to throw the right that time and then counters with a combination that again sends Woodley back to fence. High kick from Gastelum, and he follows up with a couple of good hands. Woodley shoves the emerging Gastelum away that time, but Gastelum has found his range. He's landing the bigger shots here in the third. They clinch, and go to fence, with Gastelum the aggressor. He's bleeding over his left eye. Woodley rolls his arm around to set up a punch, and he slams home a right hand. Telecast saying Gastelum's cut is from an accidental headbutt. Gastelum throwing bombs from center, and Woodley nearly got clipped on the third shot leaning away. They tie up again, and roll to the fence, with Woodley posting on the links throwing baby shots to the ribs. Dean advises them to work. Gastelum turns Woodley around, and drops a hammerfist into his thigh. Ten seconds, and they let loose. Couple of big shots, nothing big landing. Crowd lets up a protest as the round ends.
