UFC 183 live blog: Jordan Mein vs. Thiago Alves

This is the UFC 183 live blog for Jordan Mein vs. Thiago Alves, a welterweight bout at Saturday night's UFC event at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.

Mein, who has four of his last five fights, will face Alves, who has won three of his past five fights, on the main card.

Round 1: The referee to kick off the main card is Herb Dean. Mein to center. Leg kick from Mein and another to Alves' lead leg. Right hand from Mein grazes Alves, and on the next exchange he throws another overhand right. Alves with a right, and then he eats a kick. Counter left from Mein hits flush, and Alves press on. So far Mein landing bigger shots and more effectively on the exchanges. Alves comes in with a combo, and Mein gets out of the way and counters with a nice elbow. Another elbow form Mein. He looks very poised in there. Alves tries a couple of low kicks, and each are errant; now Mein plants and throws a wild right which misses. Jabs from Mein, and then comes in low with a body punch. Alves tries to come in high with a kick, and that opens him up for attack, as Mein moves forward and lands about three solid punches. Fluid movement from Mein, and very loose. Lead elbow from Mein that time and he follows up with a big overhand that misses. Now Alves presses forward, and that incites a big trade. Mein with a huge uppercut! Now Mein is throwing for the finish, he's got Ales on the fence. Big punches, and now an elbow. He's sizing things up, and Mein strikes from range with a left. Alves wobbly, but still there. He eats a knee, then a left right down the pipe. Much of what Mein is throwing is getting through. Great first round for the 25-year old Mein. MMA Fighting scores R1 for Mein, 10-9.

Round 2: Alves quickly to center. Mein rolls around and somersaults out of there. Not sure what he was doing there. Crowd lets up a roar. Alves comes in with a huge body kick which crumbles Mein! Now Alves comes in and is throwing bombs looking for the finish. A couple of big follow-ups with his left hand and Herb Dean calls him off! Wow! Alves was getting worked and then landed that big body kick to the ribs. Came in with flying knee and then the finish with strikes.
