UFC Fight Night 36 took place February 15, 2014 at the Arena Jaraguá in Jaraguá do Sul, Brazil. Middleweight contenders Lyoto Machida (21-4) and Gegard Mousasi (34-4-2) collided in the night's headlining bout, which aired live on FOX Sports 1.

Round 1: The referee in charge of the action is Mario Yamasaki. Machida opens southpaw with Mousasi in orthodox. Mousasi lands minimal outside leg kick. Hard body kick for Machida finds the mark as does a quick inside leg kick. Hard outside leg kick lands for Mousasi and he dodges a blitz from the Brazilian. Good counter left hand for Machida as Mousasi tried to press in.

Round 2: Machida kicks off the second round with a thudding body kick. He also lands a decent inside leg kick. Another body kick scores for Machida. Mousasi closes the distance and eats a hard right hand. Machida lands a head kick, but somehow Mousasi catches it, yet can't turn it into a takedown. Mousasi manages to land a few right hands in close as he traps Machida and another one-two. Two inside leg kicks score for Mousasi. Mousasi seemingly attempts a takedown, but it's easily stopped. Round 3: Decent body kick for Machida opens the round. Mousasi attempts a single and can't get it, so they clinch. Hard lead left lands for Machida and now he's doing the stalking. Spinning back kick seems to land for Machida, too, but Mousasi shrugs it off. Two head kicks attempted and partially landed for Machida. Mousasi connects with a left hook on the end of a combination, but Machida counters with a knee to the body. Machida reaches for a double, but Mousasi locks up a standing guillotine and the Brazilian separates.MMA Fighting scores this round 10-9 Machida
Round 4: Mousasi manages to score on a double, but Machida fights it off long enough in a scramble to get back to his feet. Outside leg kick lands for Mousasi. Machida switches stance and plants Mousasi on the mat with a foot sweep. Mousasi uses butterfly guard to sweep to the left side and is now working in Machida's closed guard. Machida manages a reversal of his own and lands an inadvertent but illegal upkick on Machida. The bout is temporarily stopped, but resumed.MMA Fighting scores this round 10-9 Mousasi
Round 5: Checked inside leg kick from Machida to Mousasi. Capoeira kick from Machida is blocked. Crushing left knee for Machida drives into Mousasi's midsection. Blood from the nose of Machida dripping now and Mousasi is stalking hard. Mousasi in on a double, but tries to roll through to secure it. He can't and Machida is on top in half guard. Mousasi attempts to elevate Machida with a hook, but ends up getting his back taken in transition.
