UFC 169 live blog: Jamie Varner vs. Abel Trujillo

This is the UFC 169 live blog for Jamie Varner vs. Abel Trujillo, a lightweight bout at Saturday night's UFC event at the Prudential Center in Newark, N.J.

Varner, who has won two of his last four UFC fights, will face Trujillo, who is 2-1 (with one no-contest) in his last four UFC fights, on the main card.

Round 1: Dan Miragliotta is the third man. They are circling with Varner holding the center. Trujillo a little caution early, timing his shot. Varner with nice right cross that lands. Trujillo only to happy to engage and throws some big leather at Varner, and got the better of him. Another big exchange, this time Varner slips a punch then ducks out of the way of another and lands beautiful counter. Now Varner shoots for takedown, and gets it, immediately taking Trujillo's back. Trujillo throwing short punches over his shoulder, but bad spot here for the Blackzilian. Varner cranking the neck here and Trujillo is lying in the middle of the cage, still fending. Varner just smothering Trujillo as they lie neck-to-neck. Now Varner lets go and tries to advance, but Varner is up to an ovation. Trujillo comes out guns blazing, throwing bombs! Varner wings from the hip too, and each man eats some shots. Trujillo got the better of that flurry. Now they circle back to the center of the cage. Trujillo swoops in with lunging combo, and Varner plants, ducks and counters. Great action as the round closes. MMA Fighting scores R1, 10-9 for Varner.

Round 2: Trujillo straight to the middle, and the gunfight continues. Varner tries to bring his knee up for kick, misses but slams his left home. Trujillo aggressive though, and he throws a couple of shots. Varner now on the offensive, running forward throwing big shots. Wow! Trujillo eats a couple, but returns fire. Now Varner is swinging away, and landing shots, several get through. Trujillo in trouble. He gets to his knees while Varner continues to flog him with punches, hammerfists and elbows. Trujillo stands, and against the cage both men plant and swing! It's a straight up wheelhouse gun fight! Varner landing shots, throwing recklessly, throwing wild. And now Trujillo clips him with a right hand! And down goes Varner. He's out! Trujillo was in deep water and flailing, stepped aside from a punch and just slammed a right cross home on Varner that mashed into his face and dropped him where he stood. It looked like he was done. Wow! Shades of Cheick Kongo and Pat Barry.
