UFC on FOX 13: Junior dos Santos and Stipe Miocic bring home fight of the night bonus

Mark J. Rebilas-USA TODAY Sports

In what will go down as one of the best heavyweight scraps of 2014, Junior dos Santos held on to beat Stipe Miocic on Saturday night at UFC on FOX 13 in Phoenix. And though the judges had the hard task of picking a winner in the back-and-forth fight, the UFC had the easy job of awarding them for their efforts.

Both Miocic and Dos Santos took home an extra $50,000 Fight of the Night bonus for their five-round war of attrition. Ultimately Dos Santos was awarded the unanimous decision(48-47, 49-46, 49-46), but Miocic's stock rose in defeat.

Long considered a radar contender in the heavyweight division, Miocic stood tall against the former UFC champion Dos Santos. Even though he was installed as a fairly significant underdog, it looked like Miocic's fight going into the third round. That's when Miocic began to fade and Dos Santos turned things around, edging him on the scorecards the rest of the way.

Meanwhile, fellow heavyweight Matt Mitrione (9-3) scored his third straight victory over veteran Gabriel Gonzaga, and his first round TKO victory earned him a performance of the night bonus. Mitrione -- along with Ian Entwistle, who submitted Anthony Birchak via heel hook in the opening bout of the night -- each took home an extra $50,000 for POTN.
