Kelvin Gastelum vs. Tyron Woodley slated for UFC 183 co-main event

Kelvin Gastelum put the entire welterweight division on notice with his dominant showing over Jake Ellenberger at UFC 180, and now he'll look to do it again. The undefeated 23-year-old is scheduled to fight Tyron Woodley on Jan. 31 in the co-main event of UFC 183, promotion officials announced Tuesday.

A Mexican-American who won TUF 17 as a season-long underdog, Gastelum (10-0) blew the doors off Ellenberger last Saturday en route to a first-round submission in the co-main event of the UFC's inaugural trip to Mexico. The performance validated Gastelum's place as one of the fastest-rising stars inside the 170-pound division, and pushed his UFC record to a perfect 5-0.

Now ranked No. 7 on the UFC's media-generated welterweight rankings, Gastelum will turn his attention to Woodley (14-3), a former Strikeforce product who captured finishes over Dong Hyun Kim, Carlos Condit, and Josh Koscheck over his last four fights, with his lone blemish coming in a listless unanimous decision loss to Rory MacDonald.

Woodley is currently ranked No. 3 in the division, and a victory over him would all but assuredly throw Gastelum's name into title contention.

"I'm excited to compete against Kelvin Gastelum Jan. 31st as the co-main Event of UFC 183," Woodley told MMA Fighting's Ariel Helwani. "It's a big card, and lots of eyes will be watching. I have been watching him come through the ranks. His last two wins have earned him a top 10 ranking. I always look over my shoulder as these young studs remind me of when I was begging for a shot at a top 10 welterweight. I know the hunger, drive, and I embrace it. Looks like Brown will fight Tarec, Carlos I beat and he's injured, and no one is sure when GSP will be back so it made sense. He asked, and he shall RECEIVE!"
