Shooto Brazil plans soccer stadium event in December

Guilherme Cruz, MMA Fighting

The UFC hopes to do hold a MMA event in a soccer stadium in Brazil one day, but it won’t be the first promotion to do it.

Shooto Brazil 52 is expected to take place at the Joaquim Americo Guimaraes stadium, also known as Arena da Baixada, on Dec. 5. Shooto officials have yet to officially announce the deal, but G3 United, responsible for sponsorships and events at the stadium, already is advertising the MMA event on its official website.

Arena da Baixada was one of the stadiums to host games during the 2014 FIFA World Cup. The stadium holds approximately 43,000 fans for soccer matches.

According to G3 United, Shooto Brazil 52 will feature 12 MMA bouts, including five championship fights. Marcio Cromado, leader of RFT, confirmed to that Luiz Gustavo Dutra vs. Carlos Alexandre Pereira, for the welterweight belt, will be one of the title match-ups on the card.

"The rematch is set for Dec. 5 in Curitiba," Cromado told "It’s going to be the best event of the year."

Pereira originally defeated Dutra via split decision at Shooto Brazil 49 on Aug. 24, but the controversial result was overturned to a no-contest by the Brazilian MMA Confederation (CBMMA) after five judges reviewed the bout, and all five judges scored it in favor of Dutra.

The current Shooto Brazil champions are Gilberto Dias (strawweight), Alexandre Pantoja (flyweight), Raoni Barcelos (featherweight), Ronys Torres (lightweight), Ismael de Jesus (middleweight) and Carlos Eduardo "Cachorrao" (light heavyweight). The bantamweight, welterweight and heavyweight titles are currently vacant.
