UFC 162 results: Tim Kennedy out-grapples Roger Gracie in decision win

Esther Lin, MMA Fighting

It has been nearly 20 years since a Gracie won a UFC match, a streak that was supposed to end at UFC 162.

The family will have to wait a little longer to end the drought after Roger Gracie lost to Tim Kennedy in a unanimous decision at the MGM Grand Garden Arena.

Though the fight lacked fireworks, Kennedy fearlessly competed with Gracie on the ground, and in fact outworked him positionally when it mattered. Gracie had his chances, scoring three takedowns, but Kennedy either defended perfectly or got up to his feet in an instant.

Showing his complete faith in his own grappling skills, Kennedy scored two of his own takedowns and did some damage from the position with strikes.

The judges ultimately scored it for Kennedy 30-27, 30-27, 29-28.

According to FightMetric stats, Kennedy out-landed Gracie 126-16 in the fight.

The fight was the UFC debuts for both men. Kennedy is now 16-4 while Gracie fell to 6-2. Even in defeat, he joined Royce, Renzo and Rolles as Gracies who have fought in the UFC. Royce Gracie is the last Gracie to earn a win, beating Dan Severn by triangle choke at UFC 4.
