UFC 162 results: Mark Munoz returns with win over Tim Boetsch

When we last saw Mark Munoz, he was getting brutalized by Chris Weidman. That was a year ago. Since then, he had surgery, went through a bout of depression and blew up to over 260 pounds before working his way back into fighting shape.

On Saturday night at UFC 162, none of that mattered. Munoz put it all behind him and returned with a strong victory over Tim Boetsch, taking it by unanimous decision.

The judges scored it 30-26, 30-27 and 29-28.

"I really went through a depression I never thought I would," Munoz said afterward. "I'm living proof of what you can do with determination, will and desire."

Munoz out-landed Boetsch 160-50 in total strikes, according to FightMetric stats.

Munoz began to take the fight over about midway through the second, scoring a takedown that led him into the half-guard position. He took advantage of the spot, scoring with strikes. As Boetsch worked to get up trying to use the fence, he got stuck and Munoz trapped him and capitalized with punches to the body and face as well as knees to the body.

The third was perhaps even more dominant, as Munoz attacked the body and head with strikes and nearly finished with a rear naked choke.

Boetsch's best moments came in the first, in particular a slam takedown in the opening seconds of the fight. After that, it was mostly Munoz's fight.

Back on the winning track, Munoz is now 13-3 while Boetsch dropped to 16-6.
