Renan Barao vs. Eddie Wineland to co-headline UFC 165

Anne-Marie Sorvin-US PRESSWIRE

UFC interim bantamweight champion Renan Barao will attempt to defend his title for a second time when he takes on Eddie Wineland in the co-main event of UFC 165.

UFC officials announced the bout on Wednesday, following an initial report from the Saskatoon StarPhoenix.

Barao and Wineland were first slated to meet June 15, 2013 at UFC 161, however a Barao foot injury prevented the match-up from coming to fruition.

Barao (30-1, 1 NC) now looks to continue his remarkable streak of 31 straight fights without a loss. Still just 26 years old, Barao holds a perfect 5-0 record inside the UFC, culminating in a decision victory over Urijah Faber last year to claim the interim bantamweight strap. Barao went on to defend his title in February with a fourth-round submission win over Michael McDonald.

A former WEC champion, Wineland (20-8-1) enters the contest riding momentum gained from consecutive victories over top-10 bantamweights Scott Jorgensen and Brad Pickett, the former of which earned Wineland ‘Fight of the Night' honors.

UFC 165 takes place September 21, 2013 at the Air Canada Centre in Toronto, Canada. UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones puts his belt on the line against Alexander Gustafsson in the night's main event.
