UFC 161 results: Jake Shields takes bizarre split decision from Tyron Woodley

Jake Shields was victorious in his return to both the UFC and the welterweight division on Saturday. But his performance against Tyron Woodley at UFC 161 showed nothing that would indicate Shields is going to contend for the title any time soon.

Shields, fighting for the first time since a suspension for flunking a drug test after UFC 150 last summer, scored a bizarre spilit-decision victory. Shields took two 29-28 scores, while the other judge scored the fight 30-27 Woodley.

The bout was frequently jeered by the sellout crowd it Winnipeg's MTS Centre, which had been raucous all evening heading into the fight.

Shields, (28-6-1, 1 no-contest) neutralized Woodley in the clinch and vastly outlanded him with knees in close. He was never able to come close to finishing the fight, though, as Woodley used his wrestling base to stay on his feet most of the time, in spite of Shields' best attempts.

Woodley, (11-2), meanwhile, never could turn things up another notch, even when it became clear he needed to do so in the final round. Woodley did manage to land a nice spinning back fist late in the round, but was unable to follow up.

Shields, a former Strikeforce champ, improved to 4-2 in the UFC with the one no-contest. Woodley has dropped two of his past three fights.
