TUF 17 results: Clint Hester KO's Bristol Marunde with elbow strike

Esther Lin, MMA Fighting

With a pro boxing background, Clint Hester threatens knockouts with every strike he throws. But it was something that isn't even allowed under the rules of The Sweet Science that got the job done on Saturday night.

Competing in his UFC debut at The Ultimate Fighter 17 Finale, Hester pulled off a rarely seen elbow strike knockout at 3:53 of the third round.

Hester had battered around his opponent Bristol Marunde for most of the second and third round, gaining momentum as the fight went on and he was able to stop Marunde's takedowns. But the end came as Marunde feinted to his left and Hester stepped in with a perfectly timed right elbow that caught him flush.

Marunde (12-8) crashed down to the mat, and referee Steve Mazzagatti stepped in immediately to call a halt to the action.

The strike was reminiscent of the blow Chris Weidman used to beat Mark Munoz last July.

Hester (8-3) was the first pick on the recent season of TUF, but was upset in the first round of the tournament, losing by submission to Jimmy Quinlan. Marunde looked to take the fight to the ground and follow Quinlan's blueprint, but instead it was Hester pulling off something both unique and memorable.
