UFC Fight Night 33 results: 'Shogun' Rua knocks out James Te Huna

All throughout the week, the chatter was relentless: Was this it for mixed martial arts legend Mauricio "Shogun" Rua? Would the former UFC light heavyweight champion have to call it a career after meeting James Te Huna in Brisbane, Australia?

One vicious counter jab stopped all that talk cold. And Te Huna, as well.

In one of the year's most memorable knockouts, Rua slipped a Te Huna left and dropped him cold with a short left hand to the jaw.

Te Huna dropped to the mat on the spot. Rua went in for, and missed a big follow-up bomb, but it was all for the best, as Te Huna was out.

The fight was stopped at 1:03 of the first round.

In his post-fight interview, 'Shogun' was gracious to his fallen foe.

"James Te Huna is a good fighter and a very strong fighter," Rua (22-8) said through an interpreter. "I knew he'd come at me aggressively so I timed his engagement and it worked out good for me."

Rua snapped a two-fight losing streak with his victory. Te Huna (16-7) suffered his second consecutive defeat.
