UFC on FOX 9 results: Joe Lauzon gets unanimous decision over Mac Danzig

Kyle Terada-USA TODAY Sports

With both Joe Lauzon and Mac Danzig coming into Saturday night's bout on two-fight losing streaks, something had to give. And, though the both fighters came at each other like men who understood the direness of the stakes, it was Lauzon who got his arm raised in the end. He scored a lopsided unanimous decision over Danzig (30-27, 30-27, 30-27) using crafty stand-up and dominant ground game.

Lauzon came out gun's blazing, getting Danzig down and advancing into full mount early. He then rolled into an armbar attempt that Danzig was able to step over and escape from, giving him top position. Ultimately, Danzig couldn't do much with it, but the battle was on. Late in the first Lauzon was able to take Danzig back down and keep him there working his ground and pound as the round ended.

Danzig, who was able to land the jab pretty frequently throughout, was able to handle Lauzon's pressure in the second. The one-time Ultimate Fighter winner worked the clinch and kept Lauzon close until midway into the round, when Lauzon tripped Danzig to the canvas and went to work. He opened up a cut on the bridge of Danzig's nose with an elbow, and blood streamed down the side of his face as he struggled in bottom position. Lauzon poured it on, landing elbows to the head and knees into Danzig's body, eventually ending up in mount threatening for an armbar as the round ended.

In the third round, Lauzon used a hard standing elbow to set up a trip, and from there was methodical in his ground game. Working from side control, he began raining elbows down into Danzig's face and body as he kept him vulnerable with the armbar threat. Though he didn't end up getting it, it was clear Lauzon was trying to earn his twelfth career end of the night bonus with a submission.

For Danzig, it was his eighth loss in his last 11 UFC bouts. Lauzon, snapped a two-fight skid, winning for the first time since his victory over Jamie Varner in August of 2012.
