TUF 16 Live Blog: Colton Smith vs. Mike Ricci

This is the TUF 16 live blog for Colton Smith vs. Mike Ricci, a welterweight bout at Saturday night's UFC event at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas.

Smith and Ricci are competing for the TUF 16 finale welterweight title.

Round 1: Steve Mazzagatti's your referee.Touch of gloves to start. Quick early scramble ends with Ricci on top, but they're back to their feet. Smith body locks Ricci along the fence and takes him down. Ricci works back to his feet. Smith hanging on, and he climbs on Ricci's back. Ricci hits the mat. Smith still on Ricci's back. Ricci gets to a sitting position. Smith still has his back and is looking for the choke, but doesn't quite have it. Ricci finally gets out and gets to his feet, to a big ovation. The fighters high five. One minute left. Smith shoots for a low single, doesn't quite get it, but he again bodylocks Smith against the fence. Another Smith takedown with about 30 seconds left. MMAFighting scores the round for Colton Smith, 10-9.

Round 2: Another high five to start the round. Ricci throwing kicks. Ricci reacts like he got hit with a low blow, Smith comes in after him, and Ricci appears to punch him in the throat. Smith looks at Mazzagatti and the fight continues. They clinch and Smith scores a takedown. Smith again gets him in a choke, but Ricci escapes. As soon as he's back to his feet, though, Smith puts him right back on the mat. Two minutes left. A big "USA" chant in the crowd. SMith has the choke in tight this time, but Smith again escapes. One minute left. Smith working for an armbar now. MMAFighting scores the round for Colton Smith, 10-9 (20-18 overall).

Round 3: Another high give to start round three. We're right back where we started as Smith scores an immediate takedown. Some booing in the crowd. Ricci has no answer for Smith's game plan. Smith again has his back and again applies a choke. Smith briefly mounts Ricci, but Ricci switches back to a sitting position. Midway through. Crowd booing, but both guys are working. Read the first two rounds and you've more or less got the gist of round three, as Smith works for the choke but can't finish him. One minute left. Ricci switches position with about 45 seconds left and gets Smith's back. Ricci gets it right back, though, and goes for one more choke in the final seconds.
