UFC 154 undercard live blog: Cote vs. Sakara, Diabate vs. Griggs, more

This is the UFC 154 undercard live blog for the St-Pierre vs. Condit event at the Bell Centre in Montreal.

There will be seven fights on the undercard. Patrick Cote vs. Alessio Sakara, Cyrille Diabate vs. Chad Griggs, Sam Stout vs. John Makdessi, Antonio Carvalho vs. Rodrigo Damm, Matthew Riddle vs. John Maguire, Ivan Menjivar vs. Azamat Gashimov, and Steven Siler vs. Darren Elkins will be featured on the prelims.

Steven Siler vs. Darren Elkins

Round 1: The referee in charge of the action is Marc-Andre Cote. Both fighters open orthodox. Elkins reaching on punches, but hasn't landed anything overly significant. Now Elkins presses Siler into the fence with double underhooks until Siler pummels through. With a body lock trip, Elkins drags Siler to the mat. Siler captures full guard. Elkins is baiting a mount attempt with a guillotine, but Siler defends it well. Siler briefly stands before another body lock trip immediately from Elkins brings him back down. Elkins locks up a power guillotine, but Siler rolls back down to avoid it.

Round 2: Siler is taken back to the mat, but this time lands a hard upkick. Elkins standing over him trying various strikes, but nothing significant lands. After a scramble, Elkins attempts a one-armed rear naked choke of sorts, but can't get it. Elkins uses to the body triangle to pound on Siler from the back. Siler attempts another rear naked choke with the normal bicep grip, but there's daylight in the grip and he can't get it. Round ends there.

Round 3: Elkins gets Siler to the mat again, but this time Siler to stand. They both exchange a few strikes before past becomes prologue and Elkins trips Siler back to the mat. From the rubber guard mission control position, Siler creates a scramble and stands, but seconds later Elkins scores the takedown. Elkins has scored on all of his takedown attempts thus far. Elkins attempts a double, but it's stuffed and Siler nearly locks up an anaconda choke before Elkins escapes.

Darren Elkins def. Steven Siler via unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27)

Ivan Menjivar vs. Azamat Gashimov

Round 1: The referee in charge of the action is Philippe Chartier. Both fighters open orthodox. Gashimov reaches for a double and can't get it at first, but manages to push Menjivar to the mat. Menjivar turns for an armbar, but Gashimov stands out of it. He then eats an upkick on the way back down. And just like that, Menjvar goes for another armbar, this time going belly down. Gashimov taps in extreme pain.

Matthew Riddle vs. John Maguire

Round 1: The referee in charge of the action is Yves Lavigne. Both fighters open southpaw. Both fighters exchange strikes and pressuring the other, but so far nothing exceptional lands. A couple of right hooks land for Riddle. Riddle pushes Maguire against the fence and has double underhooks, but doesn't do anything with it. A few nice jabs from Maguire land. And now a left. Two failed takedown attempts from Maguire.

Round 2: Nice left hand lands for Maguire. Riddle presses Maguire into the fence with double underhooks. Maguire pummels in and they separate. Maguire connecting with several hard punches as Riddle's back is against the fence, but Riddle grabs a kick and pulls Maguire to the mat. Riddle doesn't go to the ground, however, and opts to stand over him instead. Now Riddle goes into Maguire's guard. Riddle stands and then referee Lavigne separates them. Maguire hunts for a single, but Riddle stuffs it. Jab for Maguire and a right hook. Maguire attempts a guillotine and Riddle shoots it, but can't get it.

Round 3: Riddle stalking early and lands a jab. Left hand over the top for Maguire and then a right hand. Jab fired back by Riddle. Hard inside leg kick by Riddle. Two left hands land for Maguire, but he is easily stuffed trying to take Riddle down. Riddle lands a hard right hook and stuffs another Maguire shot. Riddle tries to take Maguire down pressing him into the fence, but doesn't get it. At the last minute, Maguire tries a guillotine, but can't get anything going before the final bell.

Matt Riddle def. John Maguire via unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 29-28)

Antonio Carvalho vs. Rodrigo Damm

Round 1: The referee in charge is Dan Miragliotta. Both fighters open orthodox. Right straight lands for Damm after a minute of action. Hard inside leg kick for Damm now, too. Carvalho returns the favor to the outside of Damm's leg. The fighters continue to trade hard leg kicks. Damm throws a right, but it's blocked by Carvalho. More hard leg kicks from Carvalho now as he begins to open up on Damm. Nice jab by Damm sends Carvalho's head snapping back. Twice. Leg kick from Carvalho closes the round.

Round 2: Carvalho opens the frame with a blistering inside leg kick. Now Carvalho goes to the outside. Carvalho kicks and slips, so Damm tries to take his back by leaping in the air as Carvalho went under him. But Carvalho granby rolls and escapes back to his feet. Several hard inside leg kicks from Carvalho, but he eats a left hook. Left jab finds the mark by Damm. Right hand cracks Damm as the round ends.

Round 3:
Damm is trying to corner Carvalho, but eats an outside leg kick. Then Damm returns the favor. Damm lands a one-two that pushes Carvalho back and a rear-leg leg kick. Damm lands a right straight to the body. Carvalho nails the inside of Damm's front leg again and almost follows up with a head kick. Both fighters try to flurry to end the round but neither is able to land much of anything.

Sam Stout vs. John Makdessi

Round 1: The referee in charge of the action is Marc-Andre Cote. Both fighters standing orthodox. Stout wings several overhand rights, but misses on all of them. Makdessi lands a lefthand counter that is light, but knocks Stout off balance. Makdessi with a hard jab, but he eats a leg kick from Stout. And another. And another, but eats a right hand. Good jab again from Makdessi. Left hook to the body from Stout, but he eats another jab. Spinning back kick plus a jab lands for Makdessi. More jabs from Makdessi, but he eats an outside leg kick for his efforts.

Round 2: The jab lands again for Makdessi. Stout fires a left to the body, but eats a left hand counter. Stout lands another good left to the body. He chases down a single, but can't get it. More good jabs from Makdessi. Stout and Makdessi trade body kicks. Stout eating more jabs and even counters now. A nice one-two from Makdessi finding the mark. Stout attempts a single and still can't get it. Left hand counter lands for Makdessi.

Round 3: Left hand counter from Makdessi connects. Makdessi lands a hook kick, but eats a right hand in the process. A charging stout runs into the left hand from Makdessi. And another jab. And another. Stout starting to chase Makdessi and eats another hard jab. Now a right straight. Stout lands a nice outside leg kick. Makdessi parries Stout's jab and lands one of his own. Another jab for Makdessi. And another. And another. Makdessi stuffs a takedown and lands several more jabs before the end of the bell.

Cyrille Diabate vs. Chad Griggs

Round 1: The referee in charge of the action is Philippe Chartier. Griggs runs into Diabate and eats a clean left hand. Griggs falls to the mat and now Diabate is in side control. Griggs stands, but is taken right back down with with a body lock lift and dump. Griggs tries to stand, eats a few knees and in a scramble tries to take the back, but ends up back where he started. Diabate takes Griggs' back and locks in the rear naked choke. Griggs taps almost immediately.

Patrick Cote vs. Alessio Sakara

Round 1: The referee in charge of the action is Dan Miragliotta. Both fighters open orthodox. Cote swings with a right overhand and misses it. Cote lands a right hand and starts a flurry, but against the cage eats two elbows that rock him. Several more follow ups from Cote and the French Canadian is on his knees. However, in a frenzy to get the stoppage, Sakara throws multiple, clear shots to the back of the head. The referee says nothing and stops the fight.
