Weidman walks out to Tom Petty's I Won't Back Down. Maia follows. Herb Dean is the referee.

Round 1: Touch of gloves. They measure each other out to start. The southpaw Maia throws the first strike, a straight left. Weidman throws out straight rights. Weidman throws a combo and it looks like Maia trips during an exchange. Two minutes in and neither fighter has looked to bring the fight to the floor. Weidman's Superman Punch misses. Maia fires a leg kick and Weidman immediately responds with one of his own. Weidman takes Maia down with 59 seconds remaining. Maia gets back to his feet and hunts Weidman with punches only to slip on a high kick. MMA Fighting scores the round 10-9 for Weidman.

Round 2: Weidman secures the takedown and claims side control. Weidman gets a few punches in before the tricky Maia escapes. Weidman is the busier fighter on the feet and he's able to put his combinations together much better than the Brazilian. Maia connects on a overhand left. Weidman lands with a right to the body followed by a left to the head. Midway into the fight, the crowd boos for lack of action. Maia guns for the overhand left again and it just glances the top of Weidman's head. Weidman drives Maia against the fence in search of the takedown, but Maia breaks clinch and circles away to escape. Weidman scores the takedown with 21 seconds left. Weidman attempts a choke from top in the final seconds. MMA Fighting scores the round 10-9 for Weidman.

Round 3: Weidman takes a body lock but Maia frees himself. Maia shoots for the first time only for Weidman to shrug him off. Weidman grabs a double-leg on Maia against the fence and uses the fence to glide Maia to the floor. Maia tries to sweep with butterfly hooks but instead is able to use it to escape. Maia already looks tired with two minutes into the third. Maia connects a knee in clinch but Weidman is unphased. Maia shoots and misses. Weidman tries to take Maia's back but Maia spins away and to his feet. Weidman grabs a Muay Thai clinch and Maia peppers him with uppercuts. Weidman looks winded himself. Weidman attacks with knees. Maia is clearly tired. His hands are way low and the crowd boos. Not a good way to start the FOX broadcast. MMA Fighting scores the round 10-9 and the fight 30-27 for Weidman.

Weidman wins via unanimous decision (29-28, 30-27, 29-28)*

*During the official result announcement, Bruce Buffer incorrectly announced that Weidman won a split decision. According to the official score sheets, all three judges had the fight for Weidman.
