UFC 133 Live Blog: Jorge Rivera vs. Costantinos Philippou Updates

Rivera (19-8) is coming off a heated rivalry with Michael Bisping which resulted in Rivera losing via second-round TKO. Phillippou (7-2) was removed from his fight against Rafael Natal in order to fill in for injured Alessio Sakara against Rivera.




Round 1: After a quick feeling-out process, the two clinch. Philippou takes Rivera down one minute in. Rivera tries to wall-walk to his feet but Philippou prevents it with his positioning. Philippou lands lefts to the head but Rivera returns to his feet. A long clinch against the fence is broken up by ref Mario Yamasaki, and they restart. Another clinch quickly ensues, with Philippou pressing Rivera against the fence again. The Philly crowd boos. Rivera reverses position and frees himself. Rivera lands a hard right hand and looks to follow up but Philippou clinches again. Rivera breaks free and lands another right. Philippou answers back. The crowd boos the finish of the round, which goes to Philippou, 10-9.

Round 2: A Philippou short left hurts Rivera. A right hand drops him and Philippou looks for the finish. Heavy strikes from Rivera's back. Moments later Rivera reverses and has Philippou down. Left hands against the fence for Rivera, who looked on the verge of being TKO'd. Rivera hunts the guillotine but Philippou pulls free. Crowd applauds as they restart. This thing has suddenly turned into a dogfight. Philippou with uppercuts from the clinch. Still two minutes remaining. Rivera takes him down. Philippou uses an omaplata to slow him down. Rivera is trapped for an eternity but Philippou finally repositions himself in side control. But he runs out of time before he can advance or hunt another submission try. Philippou, 10-9.

Round 3: Rivera hurt Philippou early with a right hand, then a left hook. Philippou works thru it. He takes Rivera down around the four-minute mark. Rivera looks for a triangle but doesn't get close. Philippou transitions to the back but Rivera quickly escapes. After a failed takedown, Rivera has top position near the fence but can't land anything hard. Back to their feet in a clinch that doesn't see either man land anything of note. Rivera tries a takedown in the final seconds and trips, allowing Philippou to land on top of him. It's Rivera's round, 10-9.

Winner: Constantinos Philippou def. Jorge Rivera via split-decision (29-28, 29-28, 28-29)
