Yves Jabouin vs. Pablo Garza
Round 1: The biggest event in North American MMA history is underway with a glove touch. The stands are still filling and Rogers Centre is not nearly full. Garza works Jabouin into the corner and lands knees. Jabouin works free to the crowd's delight, then lands a kick that sends Garza back. Jabouin floors him twice on consecutive knees to the body, getting a rise out of the still-growing crowd. On an exchange, Jabouin again floors him with a kick to the back leg. Jabouin tries a spinning back kick. Garza grabs a clinch and jumps into a flying triangle. Jabouin tries to defend, they roll over and Garza ends up on top. He thinks about switching to an arm bar, then re-sinnks the triangle and pulls on it. Jabouin resists but eventually has to tap.
Winner: Garza via triangle submission, Rd. 1, (4:31)
John Makdessi vs. Kyle Watson
Round 1: The two spend the first minute circling each other, throwing out the occasional jab to measure distance. Makdessi tags Watson with a left hand but Watson eats it without much problem. It's a slow pace early, and Makdessi breaks the monotony with a spinning back kick that misses midway through. Makdessi nearly lands a front kick. The pace remains slow as we go under a minute left. Watson hasn't been able to find his target. Not the most exciting round, but it's Makdessi's, 10-9.
Round 2: Makdessi lands a pair of lefts as Watson advances. Watson partially lands a kick in return. Makdessi tags Watson about three times in a 5-second span, again as Watson was moving forward. All scoring strikes. Watson looks for the high kick again, but it's partially blocked. As the fight goes on it becomes clearer and clearer Makdessi is the cleaner striker, quicker, too. This round is Makdessi's, too, 10-9.
Round 3: Makdessi has bloodied the left side of Watson's face early in the round. Well folks, I think we have our knockout of the night. Makdessi with a beautiful, one-punch, spinning backfist KO for the finish. The crowd explodes at that.
Winner: Makdessi via KO, Rd. 3 (1:27)
Jason MacDonald vs. Ryan Jensen
Round 1: MacDonald shoots in immediately and Jensen tries a guillotine. MacDonald works to take his back. After a scramble, MacDonald ends up with a triangle on Jensen and gets the tapout.
Winner: Jason MacDonald via triangle choke, Rd. 1 (1:37)
Ivan Menjivar vs. Charlie Valencia
Round 1: An early clinch, and Menjivar works from the inside. A short elbow puts Valencia down and Menjivar explodes into heavy ground and pound for the win. These prelim fighters are setting the bar high for bonuses. We're 4-for-4 in finishes so far, and quality ones at that.
Winner: Menjivar via TKO, Rd. 1 (1:30)
Claude Patrick vs. Daniel Roberts
Round 1: Roberts sprints forward at the opening and Patrick quickly takes him down. Roberts hunts a kimura from the bottom and eventually uses it to get to his feet. Patrick scores with a left against the cage and they circle. Moments later, they clinch against the fence. After they break, Patrick lands a lead left hand. He looks relaxed. He takes Roberts down off a bodylock with 1:00 left. They get back to their feet but Patrick hammers him with a series of punches to the head and body. Roberts is able to back away and last the round, but it's 10-9 for Patrick.
Round 2: Roberts catches a kick and takes Patrick down early. Patrick briliantly escapes with a near-sweep into a whizzer and gets to his feet. Patrick lands a knee to the head as they separate. Patrick shoots in for a takedown, Roberts threatens with a guillotine and ends up reversing position, ending up on top and in side control. There's 2:15 left. Patrick regains half-guard as Roberts uses short punches from the top. Patrick eventually gets back to full guard. After a scramble, he's back to his feet. A close round but Roberts takes it 10-9.
Round 3: Big body kick from Roberts scores early. Patrick looks like the fresher of the two though. Patrick catches a kick and tries to get a takedown but Roberts stays on his feet. Patrick keeps working it against the cage and eventually pulls him down. He's in mount briefly, but Roberts defends and improves to butterfly guard, then gets to his feet. Patrick lands a knee as he pulls away. In the late moments, Roberts tries to work a takedown, but they get stalemated against the cage for what seems like an eternity, neither improving position. Eventually ref Dan Miragliotta breaks them. Patrick takes Roberts down in the last 30 seconds, tries a guillotine but Roberts pulls out. He ends up on top at the final horn but MMA Fighting scores it for Patrick, 10-9.
Winner: Claude Patrick via unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28)
