EAST RUTHERFORD, NJ -- This is the Strikeforce live blog for Shane Del Rosario vs. Lavar Johnson, a heavyweight bout on tonight's Strikeforce on Showtime event at the IZOD Center.Del Rosario vs. Johnson is a reserve matchup in the 2011 Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix. Johnson makes his way down the ramp to the sound of Dr. Dre's "The Next Episode." Meanwhile, Rosario steps out to Lil Wayne's "Right Above It."
Round 1: Johnson appears to be looking for a big counter right hand. Del Rosario clinches with Johnson and they fight for position against the fence. Johnson wins the clinch battle, tripping Del Rosario down. Johnson tries to ground and pound, but Del Rosario has an active guard and eventually gets back to his feet. They clash right into clinch and Johnson throws a knee in clinch. They trade shots and then tie up again. Johnson throws wide power punches and Del Rosario fires back with a high kick and punch to set up a takedown. Del Rosario takes down Johnson right into full mount with less than two minutes left in the opening stanza. Del Rosario postures up to deliver left and right hands. Del Rosario inches higher into full mount in an attempt to trap Johnson's left arm from defending. At the 33-second mark Del Rosario steps over with his left leg for the armbar and Johnson taps.
Del Rosario earns his third career submission and is first in line as a replacement in the Heavyweight GP.
