On Thursday afternoon, Pettis is scheduled to meet with Mayor Tom Barrett at the Mayor's office in City Hall where the final WEC lightweight champion will receive an official hometown proclamation for his 2010 accomplishments and work with the community.
"This is an amazing feeling," Pettis said in a statement. "It's been a crazy year. I've won a world title, been featured on MTV and SportsCenter and threw out the first pitch at the Milwaukee Brewers game. I never imagined myself being in this position. I'm really thankful that Mayor Tom Barrett and the city of Milwaukee have chosen to honor me. Milwaukee means so much to me and I'm proud to represent it every time I compete."
2010 was a giant year for Anthony Pettis as he was introduced to the mainstream audience with appearances on MTV's World of Jenks program and a spot on ESPN SportsCenter's Top 10 plays of the year for his "Showtime Kick."
Not to mention, he also captured the final WEC lightweight title, putting himself in a rare position of earning a UFC title shot before even having step foot inside the UFC cage.
The only setback thus far has been the draw in the title bout between champion Frankie Edgar and challenger Gray Maynard at UFC 125. With no winner for the Jan. 1 main event, Pettis was faced with the decision to wait for his title shot or risk his title shot by staying active. Pettis chose the latter and is now waiting for an opponent for his promotional debut.
Pettis has been rumored to face Clay Guida, but UFC president Dana White said at a media call Tuesday that although the matchup has been discussed, is not a "done deal."
