LAS VEGAS -- While you're getting ready to go out and stuff yourself with overpriced booze and cold appetizers, 22 fighters just finished starving themselves to make weight for UFC 125. In a match that will be contested for the UFC lightweight championship, Frankie Edgar will face Gray Maynard. Both fighters had no problems making weight, coming in at the limit of 155 pounds.
"I'm going to walk away with a win and get revenge," Edgar said. "You can't beat it. I'm going to start the New Year off right."
When asked how he thought the fight would go down, Maynard was a man of few words, just as he's been all week.
"It's gonna go down with a win," he said before wishing the crowd assembled at MGM Grand Garden Arena a Happy New Year.
Middleweights Chris Leben and Brian Stann both took advantage of the extra pound afforded them in a non-title fight, both weighing 186 pounds for their co-main event. Leben is seeking a four-fight win streak while Stann would make a major step forward in his career by beating the respected veteran in his path.
The most animated weigh-in came between welterweights Nate Diaz (170) and Dong Hyun Kim (171), who got in each other's faces and exchanged words, which must have been an interesting moment between them since Kim speaks limited English. The two still shook hands afterward.
Lightweights Clay Guida and Takanori Gomi both checked in at 155 for their lightweight scrap.
