THQ Extends UFC Deal Through 2018

The battle for dominance between EA Sports and THQ in the MMA video game market could turn out to be a long one.

On the same day as the long awaited release of the EA Sports MMA video game, its competitor, THQ, announced Tuesday a contract extension with the UFC through 2018.

THQ, the makers of the 2009 and 2010 UFC Undisputed, will continue to hold exclusive and worldwide rights to publish UFC video games for another seven years on practically all platforms. Already on the PS3 and Xbox 360, THQ has the right to also create UFC games for next-gen gaming consoles, PC, mobile and the iPhone/iPad.

Based on the success of the 2009 game, the UFC and THQ's intention was to follow other sports models and have annual releases, but despite favorable reviews, 2010 Undisputed game sales fell below expectations and THQ is also considering a biennial release cycle.

UFC Undisputed 2010 was released this past May on the PS3 and Xbox and last month arrived on the PSP.
