UFC 120 Live Blog: Claude Patrick vs. James Wilks Updates

This is the UFC 120 live blog for Claude Patrick vs. James Wilks, a welterweight bout on tonight's Spike TV event from the O2 Arena in London, England.

TUF 9 welterweight winner James Wilks (7-3) in June defeated Peter Sobotta at UFC 115. Patrick (12-1) has won his last 11 fights and won his UFC debut in June against Ricardo Funch.

Patrick enters the Octagon and sits on his knees, per his usual pre-fight routine. Wilkes gets a nice ovation from the hometown crowd as he enters to Busta Rhyme's version of the Knight Rider theme.

Round 1: Patrick clinches with Wilks and puts him on his back. Patrick lands bombs on the grounded Wilks. Patrick stands back up and passes to side control, and soon after full mount. Wilks tries to stay active to escape, but the Canadian is clearly the superior grappler here. Patrick stands back up and patiently avoids Wilks' upkicks. Patrick looks to pass again and ends up in Wilks' halfguard. Patrick with more punches, secures full mount to rain down left and rights with seconds before the end of round one. Wilks has a cut underneath his eye.

Round 2: They tie-up against the fence and go back-and-forth. They separate briefly and Patrick pops a left hand. Patrick gets double underhooks and takes down Wilks. Patrick, inside the guard of Wilks, has his right arm trapped. Patrick eventually frees his arm to stand up, only to jump right back into Wilks' guard. Wilks wants the omoplata but Patrick easily avoids. However, Wilks connects with an upkick. It doesn't phase Patrick as he moves into halfguard. The crowd unhappy with the lack of action on the ground.

Round 3: Wilks throws a punch and then a kick. Patrick responds with a kick and moves into clinch. They are back to battling for position against the fence. And again, Patrick takes Wilks down, into full guard. Wilks sticks his left leg for a butterfly hook, but is unable to pull anything off. Patrick stands up. Wilks looks for a leglock and Patrick calmly spins away. Patrick then moves into Wilks' halfguard and then side control. Patrick's top game is too much for Wilks. Wilks is able to turn away and escape to guard. Wilks tries to sweep again but Patrick finds his base. Patrick begins his ground and pound attack with a few punches.

Not a crowd-pleasing fight, but Patrick did what he needed to do technically to dominate Wilks for a safe win.
