Strikeforce Live Blog: Josh Thomson vs. Pat Healy Updates

Thomson takes on Healy to potentially earn a rubber match against Strikeforce champion Gilbert Melendez.

The live blog is below.

Round 1: After a quick tie-up Thomson flings out a left hook that nearly catches Healy flush. Thomson shoots in with an explosive takedown attempt, but Healy defends well. Healy pressing him against the fence and then he drops for a single-leg. Thomson slips over and takes his back, but can't stay there and eventually ends up with Healy in his guard. Thomson tries for an armbar off his back that looks close, then a triangle, but Healy hangs in there. Now it's Healy flinging Thomson down and taking his back. What a reversal of fortunes. Thomson escapes and tries for a heel-hook, but Healy could not be any less concerned. We end the round with Thomson retaking top position, but neither man with a clear advantage. MMA Fighting scores the round 10-9 for Thomson.

Round 2: A good left hand, leg kick combo from Thomson starts off the round, but Healy comes right back and scoops him up for a slam. As Thomson tries to get to his feet Healy takes his back again. Healy flattens him out on his stomach, but Thomson turns and recovers half-guard. Thomson tries to get to his feet but Healy throws him back down before eating an upkick. Healy digs for a heel-hook while Thomson elbows his thigh. Healy takes the top position after abandoning the submission attempt, and Thomson tries and fails to secure an armbar. Healy is taking Thomson's best stuff and giving it right back. You can almost see his confidence increasing as the round comes to a close. MMA Fighting scores it 10-9 for Healy.

Round 3: They trade simultaneous right hands with Thomson getting the best of it. Healy is pressing forward, but it's Thomson who has the quicker feet and the crisper punches. Thomson lands a good right after taking a left hook to the body. Healy seems as if he may be slowing down, so he moves in for the clinch rather than stay at a distance and let Thomson put his superior hand speed to work. Healy gets the takedown, but Thomson soon reverses and gets to north-south before taking Healy's back and locking on a body triangle. Thomson locks on the rear naked, but he's off to one side and Healy gives the ref a thumbs up to show that he's okay. Healy rolls and it only helps Thomson sink it deeper. There's no way out now, and Healy is forced to tap.
