LAS VEGAS -- This is the UFC 114 live blog for Diego Sanchez vs. John Hathaway, a welterweight bout on tonight's pay-per-view card from the MGM Grand Garden Arena.The live blog is below.
Round 1: Big size advantage for Hathaway. Sanchez throws a combo and drops for Hathaway's legs. Hathaway wards it off with wrist control for a while. Sanchez goes for the high-crotch. Hathaway goes down for a split-second and right back up. Sanchez backs off. Big right from Hathaway snaps Sanchez's head back. Sanchez's nose is bloodied. Hathaway drops Sanchez with a knee, and goes in for the kill. Big elbows from the top, but Sanchez weathers the storm. Hammerfists and short elbows from the top, rocking Sanchez again. Not the start Sanchez had in mind. Sanchez tries to get up, then to tie him up. Neither works as Hathaway continues punishing him from the top. Big round for Hathaway, 10-9.
Round 2: Hathaway sharp with his strikes early, retracing his path to Sanchez's nose. Sanchez switching stances trying to show a different look. Sanchez shoots a successful takedown with 3:15 left. Hathaway quickly wall-walks upright. Sanchez stays persistent looking to put Hathaway on his back, but no go. Hathaway breaks free and lands a sharp right. Round still up for grabs with 1:40 left. Another lunging right from Hathaway lands.
Round 3: Nice flurry early for Sanchez with a multi-punch combo. He's going to need a lot more of those to pull this one out most likely. Sanchez shoots in again, Hathaway answers with a knee. Hathaway is well schooled for this fight. Sanchez lands a hard right, Hathaway counters with a head kick. A minute to go and Sanchez charges in. Hathaway takes him down, but Sanchez breaks free. Hathaway gets him with a left on the way out. Diego goes for a flying knee, Hathaway side-steps it and scores with a straight right. Looks like we have an upset here. Winner: John Hathaway via unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-26)
